The right repair depends on the condition of the caravan. Some exteriors can be restored through oxidation removal, cutting, polishing and gelcoat correction. Others require sectional refinishing or a complete exterior repaint where the original coating has deteriorated beyond restoration.
Every caravan is inspected before the repair method is recommended so the scope reflects the actual condition of the surface rather than automatically moving to the most extensive option.
What UV Damage Looks Like on a Caravan or RV
The surface may start to lose its depth and gloss before becoming dull or chalky. White fibreglass can begin to yellow, coloured sections may fade unevenly and older clear coats can peel or separate from the surface beneath them.
Common signs include faded or oxidised gelcoat, chalky surfaces, loss of gloss, yellowing, crazing, stress cracks, peeling clear coat and uneven colour between exposed and protected areas.
Decals and graphics can make these differences even more noticeable. Areas protected by graphics may retain more of their original colour, leaving visible outlines once the decals are removed.
UV exposure can also highlight previous repairs where materials or coatings have aged differently from the surrounding panels.
The earlier the deterioration is assessed, the more repair options may remain available.
Restoration or Refinishing?
RnR Refinish first assesses the condition of the fibreglass, gelcoat and any existing paint or clear coat. The aim is to determine whether the surface can still be restored or whether the coating has broken down to the point where refinishing will provide a better long-term result.
Where the gelcoat remains structurally sound, oxidation removal, cutting and polishing may restore much of the original appearance. Light surface deterioration can often be improved without stripping or repainting large areas.
If the coating has deteriorated unevenly, sectional refinishing may provide a better result. This allows damaged or heavily weathered areas to be repaired while retaining suitable original sections where practical.
Where gelcoat or paint has failed across large parts of the caravan, refinishing may be the more appropriate solution. Failed coatings are removed or prepared back to a stable surface, fibreglass defects are repaired and the exterior is refinished using suitable automotive paint systems and high-UV-resistant clear coats.

Gelcoat and Fibreglass Repairs Before Refinishing
UV-damaged caravans can also develop fine cracks, crazing, previous repair marks or small fibreglass defects that need attention before refinishing begins. Painting over unstable material can allow these imperfections to return through the new finish.
RnR Refinish repairs the affected fibreglass before the coating system is applied. This can include preparing cracked areas, repairing localised fibreglass damage and correcting previous repair defects where they affect the final surface.

Sectional Refinishing and Complete Repaints
In these cases, sectional refinishing can sometimes provide a practical middle ground between polishing the complete caravan and repainting the entire exterior.
The affected areas are prepared, repaired and refinished to achieve a consistent appearance with the rest of the vehicle.
Where the deterioration is widespread, a complete repaint may provide a more consistent and durable result. This is more common when clear coat is peeling across several panels, gelcoat has badly oxidised or previous repairs and weathering have created significant variations in finish.
A full exterior refurbishment may include surface preparation, fibreglass repairs, paint application, clear coating, polishing and reinstatement of suitable trims or graphics.
The objective is to restore the caravan to a clean, consistent finish without including unnecessary work that does not improve the final result.
Manufacturer and Warranty UV Refinishing Programs
Manufacturers need a different approach from a one-off private repair. Consistency, repair scope, pricing and turnaround all need to be controlled across multiple vehicles.
For suitable programs, RnR Refinish can develop fixed-price or volume-based repair scopes that define the required preparation, refinishing method and quality standard before vehicles begin moving through the workshop.
This provides manufacturers with greater cost certainty while helping each caravan receive a consistent repair process.
Our Brisbane facility can support multi-vehicle programs involving gelcoat restoration, fibreglass repairs, sectional refinishing and complete repainting, subject to the required scope and workshop capacity.

UV Damage Found During Insurance Repairs
Removing trims, damaged panels, graphics or mouldings can reveal significant colour differences between protected and exposed surfaces. A newly repaired section may also highlight ageing or coating failure on the surrounding bodywork.
The insurance claim and the existing UV condition need to be treated separately.
The insurer generally determines which work is connected to the insured event. RnR Refinish can identify the existing condition and explain any additional refinishing options where the owner wants the surrounding areas improved at the same time.
This avoids mixing pre-existing deterioration with accident damage while still giving the owner a clear view of the available repair options.
